When people come for counseling, we first need to identify the presenting problem. Why did they come for help? It might be a current problem, an issue they have lived with for a long time, or perhaps an issue from the past that has recently come to the surface. We need to ask a lot of questions. Sometimes it takes a while to get to the main issue and sometimes what they identify as the presenting problem is only a surface problem or more of a symptom of the deeper concern. It might have been stuffed and repressed for years. The two primary areas where hidden issues seem to surface often pertain to occupations and relationships. What makes a boy a man? When does that take place? In the society in which we live there is no specific date when boyhood ends and adulthood begins. Is it at 16 years of age when you obtain a driver’s license? Is it at 18 years of age when you can vote? Is it at 21  when you can legally drink alcohol? Is it when you graduate high school? Is it when you land your first real job? Do you see what I mean? It’s pretty nebulous.

Perhaps you’re familiar with the term “situation ethics.” Situation ethics is a position which postulates that the situation determines the ethical stand needed. In other words, if the situation dictates that a lie would be the most ethical position, then you would lie. Those who hold this view believe that there are no absolute ethical values, no concrete, never-changing standards that govern the morality of humanity regardless of race, nationality, creed, or religion.
