There has been major concern this summer regarding whether schools should or should not reopen for face-to-face instruction this September. There are numerous aspects to consider. Yet it seems a great many concerns are not directly related to education and subject matter. We seem to be stuck on what I would call the “extras” which we have come to expect from our schools. Things like before and after school child care, hot lunches, transportation, sports programs, and a variety of other extracurricular activities. Parents have come to depend on schools for far more than the education of their children. With a national election just around the corner on November 3rd, I thought it might be good to contrast the platforms of each of the major parties so you can vote intelligently. Here is a brief summary of each party. Republicans in the main are politically, socially, and economically conservative. They believe in a smaller federal government with the responsibility for meeting citizen’s needs given to the states. Democrats in the main are politically, socially, and economically liberal. They believe it is the federal government’s responsibility to provide for citizens through social programs initiated by the federal government. Here are their positions:

Last month I wrote about the terms currently in vogue in our culture, terms such as “woke” and “cancel culture.” A new term that has just come on the scene is “Karen.” What is a “Karen?” Here’s how Dictionary.com defines it:
Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people's behaviors. You hear it in speeches from public officials. You read it in magazines, periodicals, and newsfeeds. The media readily shares quotes from celebrities using it but so do many ordinary Americans. What am I describing? It’s the ever present use of profanity. It may be the f*** or sh** bomb or even the use of God or Jesus Christ’s name in vain. Why has profanity become so commonplace? As adults, what are we teaching our children when they hear us using it? Let’s talk about profanity this month.
